They Both Die at the End
"No matter how we choose to live, we both die at the end."
They Both Die at the End is a standalone novel by Adam Silvera. This novel was published on September 5, 2017 (an important date in the novel) and his most recent publication was Infinity Son, the first book in his latest series.
Would you like to know when you're going to die? Death-Cast calls both Mateo Torrez and Rufus Ementerio to do just that. To tell them that they have less than 24 hours to live. In a last effort to make a connection or maybe even a friend on their End Day, they go to the Last Friend app. Here, they meet each other for the first time and continue on enough final adventures to hopefully fill a lifetime.
When reading this book, you are given as much information as the characters. You are with them when they receive their Death-Cast call at the very beginning and have to painfully sit by and watch as they try to do everything they can't spend time enjoying in their one day. You watch as they try to fit all their living in what they can only hope is 24 hours.
I both loved and hated this book and I think that's what made it great. I hated that I had to see multiple characters, not just the main ones, struggle so much, but I loved to see them actually living. Even though it took them dying to really realize how to do it.
The author said they both die at the end, and they did. I read the author's note as well, and I agreed, no matter how begrudgingly, that having them not die at the end would have been diminishing their story in a way.
This is a truly amazing book and I recommend it to anyone that is willing to read a story that hurts a little (it hurt a lot).
